The Halloween Zine: Colossal costume inspiration, bad candy
#14: Plus, Jamie Lee Curtis says 'never say never'
Hello, Superfans!
Yes, Halloween 2024 is now in our rear view. Let’s shake it off, we’ve got this.
There’s Halloween 2025 to plan for, and there’s all the fun we can have in the meantime.
A landmark costume
The unfinished, graffiti-covered Oceanwide Plaza skyscrapers looming over the Los Angeles skyline inspired Hollywood set designer Xavier Mozejewski’s Halloween costume: a miniature replica.
Using recycled supplies from work, he built his skyscraper as close to scale as he could, using photos to capture the graffiti.
The most impressive part?
“Whatever you’re gonna do, do it fast!”
Private Vazquez, urging Ripley and Hicks to make their next move before the Aliens breach the door.

He made his costume decision three days before Halloween, and the L.A. Times captured it for posterity’s sake.
“Never say never,” says Laurie Strode
Never, EVER.
Unless you’re saying Halloween never ends. Nothing wrong with that.
Though she’d previously spoken about Halloween Ends being Laurie Strode’s last dance, Jamie Lee Curtis left the door open a crack in an Entertainment Weekly interview.
Curtis said she’s “relinquished Laurie to the ages with a warm ‘aloha’” before adding that one thing life had taught her was “never say never.”
If she were to be, say, as disappointed in Halloween Ends as I and many others were, then going out on a higher note under the right terms ($$$) might hold some appeal.
Even if she liked the way Ends played out, considering an interesting new direction for her iconic character, such as another reboot, would be smart business.
So, leave that door ajar. Builds tension and raises possibilities.
That’s why you don’t hear Michael saying never. Well, it’s one of the reasons.
When candy goes bad
In last week’s edition, we talked about the worst Halloween candies.
Sometimes, though, candy goes bad. Just slips right past its expiration date.
It’s almost like you’re a bouncer in a bar, and you admit a patron without carding them because they look the part. Then it gets ugly.
Only, in candy’s case, your taste buds are shouting, “Mayday, mayday! Eject! Eject!”
This CNET article says candy does expire, but it’s not like when perishables expire. It’s more of a texture thing, and the shelf life varies depending on the candy.
And it’s unlikely to make you sick. Though your palate might insist you speak for yourself. (← Don’t worry about it. Your palate’s resilient.)
That’s this week’s edition. Let me know what you’re never saying never to.
Have a great week ahead!
Thanks for coming up with some great Halloween stories I missed!
